What is crown molding?
Crown molding is
molding that crowns a particular structure or surface. A common example of
crown molding is the molding that runs between a ceiling and the top of an
internal wall.
Equipment required
The following
will be needed for the cutting process:

Preferably a compound mitre
(also known as miter) saw
N.B Please note that this
cutting process is only intended for walls and ceilings with 90-degree corners.
Any common type of crown molding can be used.
There are four
basic miter cuts for crown molding. They are inside left (IL), inside right
(IR), outside left, (OL), and outside right (OR).
Before cutting
the actual crown molding, it is advised that a “practice” round should be
completed using the above mentioned cheap crown molding.
Go and buy
sufficient amounts of cheap crown molding – six to eight feet of molding is
enough. The molding should be at least 2.5 - 3inches wide. Make four sample
pieces of molding, each with one of the four basic cuts mentioned above. Make
standard 90-degree cuts at the opposite end of each piece to avoid confusion.
The Process:
1.
Lay the crowning flat on the
miter saw’s table. The recommended angle to set the miter saw is 31.6 degrees.
2.
The molding piece must be
positioned on the saw correctly; the top must beagainst the fence for some cuts
and against the bottom of the miter saw for other cuts.
3.
For the Inside Left cut, the Miter
setting must be 31.6 (or the set angle) degrees right. Place the top of the molding
against the saw's fence and begin to saw the molding. The finished piece after
the cut is the piece on the left.
4.
For the Inside Right cut, the
Miter setting must be 31.6 (or the set angle) degrees left, place the bottom of the molding against saw's
fence and begin to cut the molding. The left piece will be the finished piece
after the cut.
5.
For Outside Left cut, the Miter
setting must be 31.6 (or the set angle) degreesleft and place the bottom of the molding against the saw's
fenceand cut the molding. This time, though, the right piece will be the
finished piece after the cut.
6.
For outside right the Miter
setting must 31.6 (or the set angle) degrees right. Place the top of the molding
against the saw's fence and cut the molding. The finished piece after the cut
will be the piece on the right.
If the process
is completed successfully, repeat the above steps with the proper crowning mold.
The cutting
process is then complete.
